Something about the late August air makes 50s jazz irresistible to me. I've been fond of taking hour-long afternoon walks, where I'll have some kind of jazz album playing (today, it was Chet Baker's self-titled) and a book (today, it was Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics) with me. I'll find places to sit or loiter around to read short passages from the book, then go on my way ruminating on what I read, repeating with different passages. Somehow, it makes me impossibly happy -- I get the feeling I could stay out all day just watching the world go by -- and of course I have to take advantage of the sun while it's still around. Although I didn't think much of Kerouac's On the Road, it did put me on to jazz while I was in New England.
music on rotation at the moment:
Frank Sinatra - Strangers in the Night (specifically All or Nothing at All, which I just couldn't stop listening to earlier this month in New York. I think the Harry James version is just as good as the one on this album)
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (Davis is the boss!!)
Chet Baker - Chet Baker Sings
