around half a year ago i heard that there was an online market for medieval castles, which piqued my interest. i had originally heard about it from a humorous video comparing european castle prices with canadian real estate prices, and so i decided to do some digging on my own. to my surprise, there's a whole market dedicated to this kind of thing. the general idea of it is to buy an old dilapidated castle situated somewhere in rural europe-- france or ireland or someplace-- and restore it. there are whole websites for buying castles specifically. strange, isn't it? to think that there are just a bunch of 14th century fortresses being casually listed for sale online. you really can have anything if you've got the money for it.

what would it be like to live in a castle like that? disregarding what must be an insane property tax, and the whole repair process, which must be a huge money-sink as well. i think maybe i'd like to be a warden for a castle somewhere in wales. one with a moat-- indicating its past history of being a defensive fortress, and also just cause i think moats are fucking cool. depending on location i'd most definitely have to grow my own produce. maybe i'd have a herd of sheep, and i'd lead them out and over the moors every day and watch them graze, with a shepherd dog by my side. unless i could get someone else on board with the feudal vassal life, i'd probably live alone, just me and the dog. at least i'd never feel obliged to pick up any phone calls ever again. hey, if i'm living in a medieval fortress, you might as well commit to the bit and have the decency to send notes by carrier pigeon, right? there's no way i'm installing a wifi router in my 14th century chateau. come on now.
