hello dreamwidth guess who saw depeche mode last night???!?!!? still seems so unreal to me. i'm fucking ecstatic about the fact that they're still around, making music and performing. come onnnn.. depeche mode and the cure-- two of my favourite bands and i got to see them both in the twenty-first century, within the same year? is this 2023 or 1983???

yesterday i had a rehearsal for this play we were doing for our school's fringe festival, meaning i had to stay after school to rehearse for three hours in a silly cowboy getup. after our second run-through, i excused myself and told our teacher i was going to leave early.
my dad drove us to the venue thirty minutes after doors and we were lucky enough to find a parking spot relatively easily. i was emulating dave's festivalbar 1987 look, though his jacket was a lot cooler than mine. we went to the arena with an empty water bottle, cos i didn't want to pay for the overpriced drinks inside and after fifteen minutes of walking around trying to find a water fountain i gave up and asked a guy working concession if he could fill up my bottle for me. he handed me back a full bottle of water at the low low price of nothing. sweet.

we made our way to our seats and watched the opener-- an experimental hip-hop act called young fathers. they were pretty good! after they left the stage we sat around and waited for twenty minutes. this nice woman with curly blonde hair sat next to me and we talked about the band for a while. she told me her favourite album was violator and this was her first time seeing them as well. i told her my favourite album was black celebration and she said she'd had the title track stuck in her head for days. i'm usually real quiet talking to strangers, cause i feel like i've got nothing interesting to say. but when it's about my favourite bands i'll talk your ear right off.

depeche mode took the stage at 8:50, and they blew my expectations clean out of the water. forty years and they're still such incredible performers. i didn't think they would, but they played 'black celebration' and 'strangelove,' both among my favourite dm songs, and both reintroduced to the setlist recently. martin's voice is still as stupidly gorgeous as ever, and his performance of 'a question of lust' and 'strangelove' had that entire stadium captivated. the crowd for this show was incredible as well. you could really tell there were a lot of long-time fans there. dave himself told us we were "much better than edmonton!" (though he says that at every show). everyone sang when he asked them to, made signs with their hands during 'world in my eyes' and swung their arms side-to-side during 'never let me down again.' hell, if dave gahan had told me to jump off a bridge, i probably would've. christ. i don't think anything will ever beat the feeling of being a part of the crowd all singing "all i ever wanted, all i ever needed is heeeeeeere in my arms" in unison again.
