in britain, sixth form is an optional section of school for students between the ages 16-19, where they study typically for advanced post-school qualifications. i first heard the phrase "sixth form poetry" from a press conference for a british band, through the usage of the phrase by the band's bassist. it's used to describe writing that, while ambitious with ideas, falls flat on delivery due to the youth and/or immaturity of the writer. the american equivalent would be calling something 'sophomoric,' i guess.
whenever i write, whether for an academic assignment or personal journalling, whether fiction or nonfiction, i'm met with how juvenile my words sound on paper. maybe that sounds stupid to you. hell, i'm fourteen. if my writing sounds juvenile that's because i am. that doesn't change anything, my inability to communicate ideas fully still gives me a lot of grief. i feel that my thoughts are lacking in insight, my grasp on topics shallow and half-baked at best, dull and unworldly at worst. nothing i write has got any lasting power or influence, hasn't been said before, couldn't be said better by someone else. i can only read and develop more influences with the goal of broadening my thinking. really, the most maddening part is that progress takes time and only comes in small doses.
